How to tell if you have dehydrated skin.


The reason why I have started with dehydrated skin is because it is the most common skin I come across. It is also the skin that most people don’t realise they have.

When I ask people what their skin is like, they generally tell me it’s dry. But heres the thing, there is a huge difference between a dry and a dehydrated skin. Even the type of products you buy will be different.

So what is dehydrated skin? Well it is simply the lack of water in your skin. This is where you can visibly see dehydration lines. It is one of the main reason why makeup can look very uneven and cakey on the skin.

Makeup needs to sit on moisture. If there is a lack of moisture on the skin, your makeup will –

  1. Look textured
  2. Look and feel heavy
  3. Look uneven
  4. Not stay on for long

How do I make sure my skin is hydrated?

  1. Drink lots of water. This is key as you need to ensure you are hydrated from the inside as well as on the outside.
  2. Use skin care that aids moisture (moisture magnets). Look for water based products.
  3. Use a facial steamer once a week. This will really allow all your skincare to penetrate into the skin.
  4. Carry a facial mist on you and use it ever time your skin is feeling tight. Don’t worry, this won’t make your makeup slip off, if anything, it will feed water into the skin, allowing your makeup to sit better through the day. 

The last thing you need to know about dehydrated skin is that a lot of times, it can be mistaken for ‘oily’. When the skin is dehydrated, it automatically starts over producing oil to try and hydrate and protect the skin. This is why you can end up with an oily T-Zone. By doing all the things above, you will balance out the water content in the skin and avoid a slick T-zone shine.
